Transformative

Previously known as a soprano, Roland (he/him) came out as trans in 2023, and is reinventing himself as a baritone! His work combines classical and contemporary styles, with a heavy helping of showtunes. All these genres can be heard on his innovative upcoming album “Corner of the Sky,” which captures his emotions and his changing voice in his first year of hormonal transition. In addition to soprano and baritone vocals (even some duets with both), the album will feature Roland on piano, guitar, ukulele, French horn, and trumpet.

Curious what a testosterone voice transition sounds like? “Corner of the Sky” and “What A Good Boy” are 2 songs I recorded immediately after starting T, when I was still a soprano. You’ll also hear a bit of my in-between tenor voice on “Corner of the Sky”, from about 6 months in.

“Blackbird” (below) was recorded 3.5 months on T, as my voice was somewhere in the high tenor zone and still sounding pretty androgynous.

I haven’t released (yet) any of the “Corner of the Sky” studio recordings from 1 year on T, but those are coming soon! In the meantime, here’s a self-recorded video from January 2025, about 15ish months on T. As you can hear, my range has dropped all the way to baritone and the tone is still maturing and filling out. Though I describe “Corner of the Sky” as a before/after album, even the After is still just the beginning! On that note, while you’re listening to “Hexie Mountains”, you can scroll just a bit farther and check out a link to my GoFundMe, where I’m raising money to get a Bachelor’s of Music in Voice Performance from Western Ontario University. This shiny new voice still has a lot of growing and learning to do, and I can’t wait to do it at Western’s amazing Don Wright Faculty of Music.
